Nothing's better than taking refuge in a cosy cafe with steamed up windows and a hot cup of tea on a cold wintery day. If there's something that Sheffield does well, it's independent coffee shops, so deciding which one to go to is always a bit of a struggle. A couple of weeks ago, Steam Yard was our cafe of choice...
Tucked away in a courtyard off Division Street. upon walking into the cafe, you get a real sense of Sheffield heritage in the former Silver Works, Grade II listed building, And from bakers to designers, Steam Yard prides itself in its collaborations with local heroes.
Offering a selection of treats, Steam Yard sources its cakes and bakes from the likes of other local independents such as The Depot Bakery + Joni Macaron. I went for a Steam Yard invention: a Mint Mestizo. Described as half cookie, half brownie and sandwiched with a flavoured buttercream filling, mestizos have to be one of my favourite sweet creations.
My drink of choice at Steam Yard has to be the Iced Chocolate. A beautifully creamy chocolate milk, served over ice in a Bulleit tumbler; this can only be enjoyed by those with the sweetest of teeth.
My partner went for a S'Mores Depot Bakery Donut - filled with peanut butter, Nutella + melted marshmallows. It was his first time at Steam Yard, and I think after that donut display, he'll be very happy to make a returning visit.
Steam Yard has a real cosy feel to it. You're surrounded by Sheffield natives and students alike; you can have a flick through your fave Sheffield mag; and - best of all - you can sample some of the best sweet treats to grace the seven hills.
