Boilermaker, Nottingham | Cocktail Bar Review

boilermaker cocktails

Described as "the Soho of Nottingham", Hockley is home to a whole host of trendy restaurants, vintage clothes store + bars. One such bar is the Boilermaker, found at 36b Carlton St. Specialising in fun + quirky cocktails, Boilermaker also has an impressive list of spirits on their menu. Here's what I got up to when I visited last weekend...

From the outside, Boilermaker looks like a run down, dingy shop, with fluorescent lighting. After entering and leaving our names with the shop assistant-come-bouncer, we waited just 10 minutes before we were led behind the counter. Walking into a small room with a sink and mirror on the wall, we were a bit confused as to where to go next. However, after pushing the wall, a door was revealed with a hidden room behind it...

The room is filled with cute tables and chairs, which are serviced by a friendly team of waiting staff. The atmosphere is relaxed, and because they only allow in more people when a table becomes available, there are no issues of over-crowding - even on a Saturday night!

The menu - designed to look like a troubleshooting manual - gives some information about what the bar is all about. No dress code, no deals, and no fighting - pretty straightforward really! The cocktails at Boilermaker are amazingly inventive, and are presented in the quirkiest of ways. Not all are vegetarian, so any fellow veggies should keep an eye out when selecting what cocktail to have!

I went for the Cereal Killa'h (£7.50) - Crunchy Nut Cornflake-infused Pigeon rum, combined with honey and almond milk. This cocktail is around 50:50 rum to mixer, so is a strong one - but it tasted absolutely amazing. Rosy went for something a little more fruity, which came in a sharps disposal bin, complete with a rum-filled syringe!

Lace Insert Dress can be found at Topshop - £29

We had a fabulous time at Boilermaker and would 100% recommend it to anyone wanting cocktails in Nottingham! Where is your favourite cocktail bar?
