LUSH Spa, Leeds | The Good Hour Review

A couple of weeks ago I paid my third visit to a LUSH spa for The Good Hour treatment. Most people think 'bath bombs' when they hear the word LUSH. However, in 8 British stores there are hidden away, vintage English kitchens, which are home to the sensory spa treatments bespoke to the cosmetics company.

The spas are found either above or below the actual shop, and are laid out to look like a "quintessentially English" cottage. Glass jars filled with massage bars, old iron teapots and milk jugs of fresh flowers adorn the room making you feel miles away from the bustling streets above.

The treatment itself - The Good Hour (£90) - is a 70 minute long, full body massage, following a 15 minute consultation in which the therapist discusses problematic areas with you, as well as allowing you to decide which massage bar you would like to be used. The choices are Hottie, infused with black pepper + ginger; citrusy Each Peach; lavender + neroli based Therapy; or cinnamon + mint filled Wiccy Magic Muscles. A jelly cooling disc is also used on knots to help relieve tension, and a Big Blue bath bomb is diffused with dry ice from under the massage table to set the scene of a stormy sea.

The massage is choreographed to an album of nautical related songs + shanties, and is designed to feel like the rocking of a ship on the water. While this did make me desperate for the loo ten minutes towards the end, it was really relaxing and different to the usual whale noises heard in other spa soundtracks.

When the massage is complete, the therapist tells you that when you are ready, you can get dressed and go back into the kitchen area. It took a few minutes for me to come around following the massage, but there's no need for urgency or rushing in a LUSH spa. There are bathrooms filled with LUSH products to make you look civilised again following your massage, and you can even have a shower or bath! When I did manage to leave the treatment room, I was greeted with a tea, shortbread and a little dropper bottle of rum. You also get to take the rest of the massage bar you selected with you, to re-create the spa experience at home!

If you want a non-conventional treatment which focuses on the mind as well as body, I would definitely recommend visiting a LUSH spa. Vouchers for the spa can be bought from any LUSH store or online, and the spas are located in Leeds, Liverpool, Bath, Edinburgh, Kingston, London Chelsea, London Oxford St + Poole. Treatments range from £50-£285.
